PowerThru Consulting has helped clients around the country make the most of their campaigns and win. We’ve handled projects of all kinds — from building a quick campaign website, to running entire online departments for major national non-profits. Below is a partial listing of our non-profit and campaign clients and some of their projects. Read our Case Studies for more in-depth examples of our work.
USAction / TrueMajority.org
USAction is a federation of 22 state affiliates and partners that organize for a more just America, with more than 500,000 online supporters across the United States. In 2007 TrueMajority merged with USAction to form this online powerhouse, one of the largest online organizations in the country.
PowerThru runs every aspect of the online program for this national leader on progressive action. While working closely with their staff, we relaunched their website, design their overall internet strategy, write over 200 emails, raise over $200,000 for their c3/c4/PAC, ran their volunteer calling programs for candidates and other online-offline work, keep the list of over half a million people growing and generate over a million actions every year, making an impact both online and off.
When the Public Interest Network decided to reboot Environmental Action, they needed a big overhaul. Born at the first Earth Day in 1970, Environmental Action has been kicking butt for the planet for over 40 years. But it needed a reboot – and a new program that was focused on engaging online action and powerful on-the ground actions.
PowerThru has been helping them all the way – launching a brand new website, designing engaging actions, and planning on-the-ground events that match and show real results. Working with PowerThru, they’ve added over 150,000 new email subscribers to their list in under 2 years, and become a major national force in the fights to stop Keystone XL (read our case study for more details on how a smaller list can have a big impact), fix global warming, and save wolves and other species from extinction.
New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets is a progressive organization fighting to end the terrible abuse of carriage horses in NYC. We joined NYCLASS late last year to help update their new media presence and begin their first online fundraising drives. In just a few short months, we’ve helped them raised tens of thousands of dollars (including a $30,000+ haul in December 2012 — over three times the original goal!) Now we’re helping NYCLASS get involved in the 2013 NYC elections to make sure the city elects a Mayor and City Council that’ll finally stop the abuse of carriage horses. Check out our new microsite holding Christine Quinn accountable for her anti-animal votes! We also built them another brand new beautiful organizational website on NationBuilder, NYCLASS.org.
ProgressNC is the progressive voice for forward-thinking North Carolinians who want to protect the state from the rise of radical conservatives in the state. PowerThru runs the blast email program for ProgressNC and in the past five months has taken their new media to brand-new heights. Before we came in, ProgressNC’s most successful petition didn’t have more than 300 signatures; now, every petition is getting 10,000 to 25,000 signatures. We’ve doubled their list, tripled their online fundraising, and built them creative custom micro-sites like ThankfulTuesdays.com.
Progress Iowa is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization. Year-round, we promote progressive ideas and causes with creative earned media strategies, targeted email campaigns, and cutting-edge new media. With our allies, we work to significantly improve the communications effort of the entire progressive community in Iowa.
Mayor Jim Suttle
Jim Suttle was elected Mayor of Omaha in 2009 and ran for re-election in 2013. This time, he called on the PowerThru team to plan, grow, and cultivate his online following in Omaha. Mayor Suttle is a bold, progressive leader that has been a target of right-wing and corporate attacks his entire term; at one point even facing a shady recall effort that saw Omahans renewing their faith in Mayor Suttle at the polls. During his tenure, Mayor Suttle has grown Omaha’s economy, been a leader on environmental and transparency issues, and passed protections for LGBT citizens in the city. We’re excited to have Mayor Suttle’s back in his re-election campaign. We helped them build their email list, raise a ton of online donations, spread their message online and build a beautiful new campaign website at MayorSuttle.com.
National Physicians Alliance
The National Physicians Alliance creates research and education programs that promote active engagement of health care providers with their communities to achieve high quality, affordable health care for all. The NPA offers a professional home to physicians across medical specialties who share a commitment to professional integrity and health justice. They came to PowerThru looking for some simple help sorting out donations in their Salsa installation. But when we started working together on how to not only track, but increase, their donation rates and averages — the NPA got more than they hoped for. Read our case study for more on how we did it.
Today, PowerThru helps build them innovative tools and online actions – like their campaign to protect physicians’ free speech – that have boosted donation rates, added new members and made them a more visible and powerful organization than ever. We’ve helped them grow their presence on social media to spread their message as well.
Gun Free Kids
Founded in 2007, GunFreeKids.org is an Internet-based 501(c)4 issue advocacy organization, which provides tools for people to take action on pending state and national legislation on sound gun violence prevention policies. In 2011 just weeks before the anniversary of the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech, we built a series of lobby days and call-in days that stopped guns on campus bills in Texas and Georgia from making it out of committee. And when the Arizona legislature ignored our campaign, we focused on the Governor – who vetoed the bill just a few days after our national day of action. Over the few weeks, we doubled the number of active members in GunFreeKids’ database, expanded their Facebook presence, and built new and lasting partnerships with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and other partners at the state and federal level. Then in 2012 we helped them stop more bad state-specific legislation while beefing up their social media and online fundraising.
Now in 2013 after Newtown we’ve helped them seize the moment and triple the size of their email list through strategic online actions and partnerships, and take charge of the fight for gun free campuses in specific states. We built a new website for the Campaign to Keep Guns off Campus to spread their message too.
Florida Watch Action
Florida Watch Action is an organization dedicated to strengthening the progressive movement in Florida and stopping the destructive policies of Governor Rick Scott. FWA is responsible for branding the Governor as “Pink Slip Rick” and has mobilized thousands of grassroots activists to organize and create a more progressive Florida. PowerThru is excited to join forces with this outstanding organizing. Together, we’re using our creative power and data-tested organizing skill to build a new media program that’ll stop Pink Slip Rick and his conservative allies dead in their tracks. Looking to 2014, we’re excited about their work to take down Governor Scott. We also helped them fight bad legislation in Tallahassee with the Home Rule Hypocrites microsite and online push.
Secretary of State Elaine Marshall
Progressive champion Elaine Marshall ran for U.S. Senate in 2010 and won re-election as North Carolina Secretary of State in 2012. In both races, she called on a member of our staff to execute her online presence. In 2010, Mike Nellis led the team that raised $1.7 million for Elaine’s campaign. Long considered dead in the primary, Mike used effective new media techniques to activate the power of the netroots to invigorate her campaign. Elaine would go on to beat the establishment-backed candidate in a runoff election with over 60% of the vote. In 2012, Elaine secured re-election as a highly popular statewide figure in North Carolina. In just the first few months of the year, we helped Elaine revive her new media campaign and raise nearly $100,000 online.
Treasurer Janet Cowell
North Carolina Treasurer Janet Cowell called on PowerThru to boost her new media operation in the closing weeks of 2012. Cowell’s campaign laid relatively little groundwork in building an online operation, but PowerThru delivered nonetheless. Our team refreshed Janet Cowell’s website and social media presence and helped her build an email list of over 100,000 people — almost all from scratch. In the final month of the campaign PowerThru raised $20,000 in small-dollar contributions which boosted the campaign’s paid media in November. With our help, Janet would go on to safely win re-election as Treasurer of North Carolina in 2012, and now has a strong base of online support that will go to bat for her in future elections.
Patsy Keever for Congress
Progressive champion Patsy Keever running for Congress in North Carolina in 2012 called on PowerThru Consulting to boost her online fundraising in the final months of the campaign. Before PowerThru stepped in, Patsy Keever raised $34,307 online from May to June of last year. From Aug to Nov, Patsy raised $123,023 from online contributions. Nearly four times as much! These critical funds were used to close a significant gap in the paid media budget allowing Patsy to launch her final television ad as well as run targeted online ads across the district. Read our case study for more details on how we did it.
American Bridge 21st Century PAC was one of the stars of the 2012 election cycle. With hard hitting ads, an incomparable research team, and a media-savvy team they had all the right moves. But what they didn’t have, right out of the box, was a Salsa platform that met their every need.
PowerThru helped American Bridge build custom Salsa templates that promote sharing of their ads and viral content. And we worked with them on dozens of microsites, from the hilarious StuffMiaLoves.com to the hard-hitting MittgetsWorse.com, and many more. That these sites were featured on Good Morning America, DailyKos, Huffington Post and more is awesome. That they were seen by millions of people and helped shape the narrative of the election is why PowerThru is a proud part of the American Bridge team.
African American Voter REP
African American Voter REP is the largest urban voter registration and participation project targeting African Americans in the state of California. Their goal for the 2012 election was to register 25,000 LA County voters, and turn them out to vote Yes on 30 and No on 32. But they needed help — fast — to get a website and social media presence set up as their mailings and paid advertising were beginning to reach voters. We quickly built, tested, revised, and launched a new website that is simple for voters to use and easy for them to update going forward. We also helped them massively build their audience via social media with a small budget and effective targeting. End result? They registered tens of thousands of voters, Prop 30 passed & Prop 32 failed!
Slow Money Alliance
The Slow Money Alliance is a national network and a family of local networks, organized around new ways of thinking about the relationship between food, money and soil. We helped them develop a complete online strategy for membership recruitment, and executed Salsa and custom platform technology projects.
Partnering with PowerThru in 2010, Slow Money created an online contest linking an interactive voting platform with their Salsa database. Over the four week campaign, thousands of votes were cast for over 500 local businesses and Slow Money doubled the size of their mailing list. We then repeated their project with a new local business contest in the summer of 2011 to add even more active members to their list. In the fall of 2012, we helped them launch a new project – SoilTrust, with a beautiful new website, content testing and email rollout.

Thank you for teaching the Social Media Seminar this evening. The content was excellent– particularly for novices like me. Regardless of which direction I take in running for office, your lessons will help guide me in my future efforts.
